Pedro Calapez

(Lisbon, 1953), lives and works in Lisbon. 

The artist began taking part in exhibitions in the seventies and in 1982 he had his first solo exhibition.

Pedro Calapez creates paintings that engage with space, influence our perception of archi-tecture and the exhibition room. From small formats to large scale interventions and site-specific installations, this Portuguese artist has marked a whole generation of Portuguese and Spanish artists, himself having strong connections to artists like Richter or Twombly.

He has exhibited his work individually in various galleries and museums: in 2016, there will be an important monographic exhibition of his work, shown at Carmona e Costa Foundation “The secret of the shadow. Paperworks 2012-2016” in Lisbon, as well as solo shows at museum CIAJG in Guimarães, and galleries in Porto and Zurique; in 2015 he showed: “OPENSPACE”, Galeria Belo-Galsterer, Lisbon; “E não havia nada que não viesse do olhar”, Galeria Mário Sequeira, Braga; “FROM THE LOW VALLEYS”, Galerie Seippel, Cologne, Germany, and “Off limits - Espacio sin retorno”, Galeria Luis Adelantado, Mexico City, Mexico. 

In 2014, he realized his first solo show in New York, at Lynch Tham Gallery. Calapez participated in the Biennials of São Paulo (1987 and 1991) and Venice (1986).
